FUMBL stands for the “Formerly Unemployed Musicians Baseball League “(of NYC). Technically more of a club than a league, we began in 2019 on a fall day when a group of seven NYC musicians with ambitions of playing a game of baseball were forced to settle for batting practice, unable to recruit enough players due to the busy-body nature of free-lancers in NYC. The very next summer, due to an unexpected but welcome change in our work load, we found ourselves with plenty of time for baseball, and thus the “Unemployed Musicians Baseball League” was born. Of course, all good things must come to an end, and when calling ourselves unemployed seemed inaccurate, we updated our name by adding “Formerly” and voila, FUMBL!
In our 6 years of existence we’ve been primarily focused on playing the sport we love (baseball, not softball), mostly in the form of weekly scrimmages, and occasionally in “competitive” games against like-minded “sandlot” baseball teams. Though we always thought it would be fun to present a musical performance as FUMBL, we only recently started doing so.
